The Bowery Jazz Messengers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in New York City by LaGuardia alumnus Bato Aydelotte ’21. We provide opportunities for junior/high school jazz musicians to serve their community by performing for those experiencing homelessness and poverty at the Bowery Mission.
The program is directed by musician/producer Chris Theberge (cofounder of Grammy-nominated Groove Collective). It offers young musicians a positive environment to develop their music skills and musicianship while receiving guidance from top professional NYC guest music mentors.
In addition to the performances, our young people learn leadership, group dynamics, and networking skills. They can explore arrangements more deeply with guidance from student leaders, our director, and visiting guest mentors. We provide recommendation letters for our members applying to college and
alumni returning from college for summer have an opportunity to perform for our summer program and receive a stipend.
Concerts are generally held in the Chapel of the Bowery Mission in Manhattan on the third Saturday of the month at 12 pm. There is a rehearsal/workshop held the second Saturday of each month in Brooklyn or Manhattan 1:00 pm-4:00 pm
Limited openings are currently available for 7th-12th grade musicians.
If you're interested in joining the Bowery Jazz Messengers please fill in the info form and one of our student leaders will contact you to discuss the program specifics. Parental consent is required for all members.
