The Bowery Jazz Messengers program was founded by LaGuardia High School alumnus and musician/artist Bato Aydelotte and is directed by NYC musician/producer Chris Theberge (cofounder of Grammy-nominated Groove Collective).
In addition to performing for our neighbors in need, our young people learn leadership, group dynamics, and performance skills. They can explore arrangements more deeply with guidance from student leaders, our director, and visiting guest mentors. We provide recommendation letters for our members applying to college, and our program alumni returning from college for summer have the opportunity to perform for our summer program and receive a stipend.
Concerts are generally held in the Chapel of the Bowery Mission in Manhattan on the third Saturday of the month at 12 pm. There is a rehearsal/workshop held the second Saturday afternoon of each month at Ibeam in Brooklyn.
Limited openings are currently available for 7th-12th grade musicians.
If you're interested in joining the Bowery Jazz Messengers, please fill in the info form, and one of our team will contact you to discuss the program specifics. Parental consent is required for all members.
